The river Viskan, Sweden
The project concerns a small river named Viskan, running through our municipality Borås. Downstream Borås the river passes the municipalities of Mark and Varberg were it meets the Kattegatt Sea.
Since the middle of the 19th century there have been many textile industries located in the area along Viskan. These industries and other industries let their wastewater to the river with a poor or with no preceding purification treatment. Near the city of Borås the downstream river runs through a series of three wider sections were the torrent of water is slower and the sedimentation rate higher. These sections are named Djupasjön, Guttasjön and the Rydboholm dams. From Borås to Klosterfjorden were Viskan meets the Kattegatt Sea, these are the only parts of the river were there are an actual long term accumulation of sediments.
In the sediments there are vast amounts of many types of pollutants. High or very high levels of dioxin, heavy metals, oil and pesticides have been found in the sediments. It has been shown that there is a leakage of pollutants from the sediment to the water.
To this date the project has performed a spatial mapping of the polluted sediments, risk assessment, investigation on possible aftercare methods. The river beds have been thoroughly investigated. Next step in the project is for the local politicians to reach a decision on how they want to progress with the matter. If they decide to go for a redevelopment project, the municipality have to apply for founding at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
It would be very interesting for us to cooperate with other organisations working on similar projects
