GWR and Environment Agency funded PhD Studentship
Coastal defences and biodiversity: examining the interplay between engineering design and ecological response

A substantial and growing proportion of the human population live on or near the coast. With anticipated changes in sea level and an increased frequency of storm events due to climate change there is an increasing need to defend coastal areas. In some regions over 80% of the natural shoreline has now been replaced with coastal defences, yet our understanding of how these structures interact with marine biodiversity is relatively poor. Following the award of a GWR PhD Studentship, the University of Exeter, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, the Environment Agency, Marine Biological Association of the UK and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified applicant for a doctoral studentship for three years commencing on or near 1 October 2007.

This studentship will explore the interplay between ecology, geomorphology, geology and engineering design. Within this broad objective the student will focus on measuring the effects of different material types on ecological responses during subsequent colonisation and succession.

You will be based in the Department of Geography at the new £100 million pound University of Exeter Campus in Cornwall, and will benefit from being part of a rapidly growing research environment. You will also benefit from state of the art facilities for geomorphology, weathering and marine ecology that are available at the Universities of Exeter, Plymouth and at the Marine Biological Association.  Under the terms of the GWR studentship scheme, the successful applicant will also benefit from opportunities to work closely with the Environment Agency and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, thereby gaining a relevant policy perspective and the opportunity to opportunity to communicate the outputs of the PhD research to non-academic audiences through exhibitions.

The award will provide circa. £15000 per year towards University tuition fees and maintenance for three years. For further information, or informal discussion about the position, please contact: Dr Larissa Naylor (Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Telephone: +44 (0) 1326 253617) or Dr Richard Thompson (Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , Telephone: +44 (0) 1752 232966).  Further details of this opportunity can be found under ‘Research Opportunities’ at http://www.uec.ac.uk/geography/research/staff-and-research-profiles/larissa-naylor.shtml.

Applicants should send a copy of their CV, with the names and addresses of 3 referees, plus a statement outlining their academic interests and their reasons for wishing to undertake this research project to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . The deadline for applications is Tuesday 17th July 2007.

Closing date for completed applications is Tuesday 17 July 2007.
