We are very pleased to say that in the meantime we have received more than 100 abstracts.
The SedNet steering group has been busy making a selection of abstracts for oral presentation and for poster presentation. This process is almost finished and we will finalise the conference program in the next couple of weeks.

14th conference of Rhine Ministers in Bonn

The conference of Rhine Ministers has pointed the way to future water protection policy along the Rhine.
The most important topics of future cross-border co-operation of Rhine Ministers are:

• Co-ordinated implementation of the EC Water Framework Directive in the international river basin of the Rhine and of the programme "Rhine 2020" in order to further develop the Rhine ecosystem; reconcile protection and use.
• Measures targeted at further improvement of water quality and of habitats for species again occurring in the Rhine and restoration of the river continuity for migratory fish.
• Recommendations for the further implementation of the Action Plan on Floods.
• Strategies adapting water management in times of low and high water level due to climate change, which have already been seen to emerge in the extreme meteorological events of the past years.

After the conference there was an action from a couple of NGO's on different topics.
At this the Reinwater Foundation and the Port of Rotterdam Authority addressed the ICPR to implement the necessary measures to prevent future contamination of the ecosystem of the Rhine and North Sea. Reinwater Foundation and the Port of Rotterdam Authority also stated that the implementation of the Sediment Management Plan of the ICPR is an important first step to do so. With this action also SedNet was promoted, and the role SedNet can play on this issue.

After two years of dedicated work by industry experts from IADC and CEDA, IADC and CEDA are  happy to announce the publication of a completely revised version of Environmental Aspects of Dredging. This new and updated edition integrates the IADC-CEDA series of seven stand-alone guides.

This new single volume version (384 pages, illustrated) will be published by Taylor & Francis Publishers in January 2008. Edited by Nick Bray, it has been thoroughly rewritten and restructured, with contributions from many experts, researchers and professionals including the IADC/CEDA Editorial Advisory Board, the CEDA Environment Commission and the EuDA Environmental Committee and numerous IADC, CEDA, EADA and WEDA members.

The book treats all environmental aspects of dredging including the assessment of design effects, process effects, sampling and testing, dredged material management, international and regional legislation and case studies, and reflects recent industry advances.

Fundamental to the philosophy behind this new edition is the principle that dredging is a necessary activity in civilisation’s development, but that sustainability is paramount. The authors acknowledge that dredging techniques and activities in and of themselves will always make some change in the environment and that, although dredging always seeks to improve a given situation, awareness of the repercussions of change is essential.

Sediment sessions at the European Geosciences Union annual symposium in  Vienna, Austria, 13-18 April 2008

HS5.1 - Science for improved sediment management in river basins – organized by Phil Owens and Wolfgang Summer
Sediment management represents an important component of river basin management. It focuses on diffusive processes, such as soil/sediment and pollutant losses from the catchment, as well as on linear transport processes in the draining river system. A wide range of relevant methodologies and modeling tools exist for describing and estimating these processes and for understanding system dynamics. Contributions should focus on: (1) the application of methodologies and models within the decision-making process to manage river basins in terms of sediment and pollutant relocation; (2) relevant measurement and monitoring techniques to develop sediment budgets and linked pollutant loads; and (3) ways to integrate environmental, economical and societal sediment functions as part of sustainable environmental management.

HS5.4 - Linkages between the sediment cycle and aquatic ecology: impacts of sediment and sediment-water interactions on habitats and ecosystems (co-listed in BG) – organized by Ellen Petticrew, Alison Reeves and Susana Neto
The movement and storage of sediment within aquatic systems has the potential to alter the physical, chemical and/or biological functioning of aquatic habitats. Ecosystem response to a range of environmental changes includes changing sediment quantities and quality which can be both positive and negative given that the mineral and organic sediments transfer and provide nutrients and contaminants. For example microbial processes aid in the cycling of nutrients while organisms further up the food chain are involved in nutrient spiraling along the aquatic network. Physical and chemical conditions in the aquatic environment can generate fluxes of contaminants between sediment and water phases degrading water and habitat quality. Sediment itself can act a pollutant being both a physical barrier to inter-gravel flow or suspended in such high concentrations that habitats are unusable. As aquatic species from bacteria to fish are resident in sediment, or feed on the material, the implications for changing sediment quality and quantity on habitats and ecosystems are broad.
Contributions are welcome for both large and small scale investigations of sediment-water interactions (organic and inorganic) influencing aquatic ecosystems and habitats. Approaches including field, laboratory and modeling are welcomed.

The workshop is organised by the International Commission for the Hydrology of the Rhine basin (CHR) in cooperation with UNESCO ISI, the German IHP/HWRP Secretariat and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment. Participants are encouraged to present their work in the field of sediment management in poster form. Participation to the workshop is limited to approximately 60 persons.
Deadline for registration is 1 February 2008 or earlier if the maximum number of participants is exceeded.
