5th International SedNet Conference 27th-29th May 2008

hosted and co-organised by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Oslo, Norway

Urban Sediment Management and Port Redevelopment / Sediment in River Basin Management Plans

Until today almost 100 participants registered for participation. If you cannot find your name on the attached participants list and wish to attend, then please complete the conference registration form and send it to the SedNet Secretariat ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) before May 1st.

Via the SedNet Conference Registration form you can at the same time register for the:

Workshop Sustainable Sediment management - a systems approach from a resilience point of view

organised by the project team of Living with Sediments on 30th May 2008
hosted by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Oslo, Norway

The programs of both events (and the registration form) can be found on http://www.sednet.org/

New booklet on clean-up of contaminated sediments

For those who are considering (or involved in planning) expensive clean-up of contaminated sediments, the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute has recently published a 50 page booklet titled: “Deciding About Sediment Remediation”. This booklet describes a step-by-step sequence of decisions to determine whether, and how, to clean up contaminated sediments, or to let natural recovery occur. More than that, the booklet summarizes the pioneering work of 26 researchers at four universities in the Great Lakes Basin; a project group who laid a foundation for numerical simulation of sediment remediation processes and cost optimization of sediment cleanup projects.

The booklet is available in a paper copy (at US$ 20 ) or as a free download (.pdf document) at http://aqua.wisc.edu/publications/ Click on “Contaminants” in the sidebar, on the left sidebar for this booklet and related publications, then click on the book title for a brief description, the free download, or purchase options. A direct download of the book is at: http://aqua.wisc.edu/publications/PDFs/SedimentRemediation.pdf

UNESCO-ISI – International Sediment Initiative

In March ISI published its 8th newsletter. You can download the newsletter from http://www.irtces.org/isi/newsletter.asp
