SedNet continues!
The SedNet Steer Group (SG) met in Venice
on March 23rd and 24th, 2005 to define the scope of SedNet from 2005. The SG, through its founding members (see below), succeeded to safeguard enough
finances to at least maintain in 2005 a SedNet secretariat (see below), and hence the SedNet website, e-newsletter etc. The year 2005 is regarded as a
transition year in which the SG seeks to extend the SG with other members who are willing to help to further structure and define the new strategy of SedNet
and who are also willing to support (fund) the activities agreed upon. The SG met at San Servolo Island, which will remain the SedNet homebase.
Furthermore, also our mission remains:
To be a European network for environmentally, socially and economically viable
practices of sediment management on river basin scales.
We want to be:
A network of sediment professionals
(multi-stakeholders & scientists) and to be the independent platform to expert-advice on any issues related to (sustainable) sediment management
challenges, positioned between science/knowledge providers and end-users/stakeholders.
Our focus is:
On sediment quality
and quantity issues on a river basin scale, including: estuarine/marine sediments, the origin of sediment (soil erosion) and re-erosion of (contaminated)
sediments.
Our aim is:
- To disseminate what we have produced so far, and especially our messages as
summarised in the SedNet booklet “Contaminated Sediments in European River Basins” · To balance sediment research demand & supply
- To
be the window on sediment issues to EC DG Environment.

Rhine Commission
enthusiastic about SedNet
At May 23rd & 24th, 2005, a sediment workshop organised by the International Commission for the Protection of the
Rhine (ICPR: www.iksr.de) was held in Bonn, Germany. The goal of the workshop was to collect ideas for the
development of an integral strategy for a sediment management plan for the River Rhine. Scientist as well as important stakeholders from the countries along
the Rhine were invited to contribute to the discussion. SedNet (represented by Jos Brils; several other SedNet members were present too) was invited to give
its viewpoint on a river basin wide sediment management plan, as summarised in the SedNet booklet “Contaminated Sediments in European River Basins”. A hardcopy of the booklet was made available to all participants. In his opening
presentation, Dr. Fritz Holzwarth, president of the ICPR, referred several times to the SedNet work. He concluded that the preparation of a sediment
management plan for the River Rhine may be used as an example for other basins in Europe and that the results may be disseminated to these basins through
SedNet. The viewpoints of SedNet towards sediment management at the river basin scale met support from the participants. Some participants indicated to be
willing to join the network and even consider to also financially support the network activities.

SETAC/SedNet sediment advisory group founded
On 22-26 May 2005, the Society of Environmental Toxicology and
Chemistry held its 15th Annual SETAC Europe Meeting in Lille, France. With almost 1600 participants it was the largest European SETAC conference ever. The
main topics that attracted this audience from academia, business and government were “Environmental fate of metals and organic pollutants”, “Ecotoxicology”,
“Ecosystem and Human Health: Societal concerns”, “Risk Assessment and Risk Management”, and “Life-Cycle Assessment”. So called “special symposia” that were
dedicated to specific subjects addressed various aspects of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment, of heavy metals and organic pollutants in soils, and
of marine oil spills. One special session was dedicated to “science and politics: from science to decision making” with representatives from the European
Commission and international centres concerned with management and policy issues. Although more than 80 presentations in this meeting mentioned “sediment” in
their titles, no session was specifically dedicated to it. Feeling the necessity to strengthen sediment issues in the perspective of European environmental
management and to facilitate communication between people in Europe that work on sediment-related issues, SedNet and SETAC joined forces in the formation of
a European Advisory Group on Sediments. On May 24th, this advisory group was formed with 11 steering group members that are willing to assist in facilitating
exchange between research (SETAC) and application (SedNet) with regard to sediment issues and to provide a forum on conferences and workshops, for example at
the next European SETAC meeting in The Hague in 2006.

SedNet
at NATO sediment workshop Bratislava
At May 18th – 21st, 2005, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the “Assessment and Remediation of
Contaminated Sediments” was held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. The workshop was conducted by the Hazardous Substance Research Center/South & Southwest,
a US EPA-sponsored university consortium that specializes in sediments-related research. The workshop's objective was to identify and exchange information
between North America and Europe on key scientific issues associated with assessment and remediation of sediments. Jos Brils participated to this workshop
and in the opening lecture he started by presenting the European/SedNet viewpoint on sediment and its management. The workshop presentations will in due time
be made available through the USA SedWeb (www.sediments.org). Furthermore, the scientific results of
this workshop will be published in a book to be issued by Springer before the end of this year. One conclusion of this workshop may be that an important
driver towards river basin scale sediment management, that is present in Europe through the Water Framework Directive, seems to be lacking in the USA. SedNet
regards management at that scale is as a prerequisite for sustainable sediment management.

Sediments (JSS: http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/jss) reached another milestone in
its existence: As of 2005, JSS has been selected for coverage in ISI-Science Citation Index Expanded, also known as 'Web of Science'.

regulatory issues on contaminated sediments; an overview based on the results of the SedNet network activities.
The SedNet main
recommendations towards European policy development, sediment management and research, respectively, are:
- Further develop and eventually
integrate sustainable sediment management into the European Water Framework Directive
- Find management solutions that carefully balance
social, economic and environmental values and are set within the context of the whole river system
- Improve our understanding of the
relation between sediment contamination (hazard) and its actual impact to the functioning of ecosystems (ecological status) and develop strategies to assess
and manage the risks involved

EPA has released a publication entitled "A Compendium of Chemical, Physical and Biological Methods for Assessing and Monitoring the Remediation of
Contaminated Sediments Sites" (EPA 600-R-04-108). This document, prepared by EPA's Office of Research and Development, summarizes chemical, physical, and
biological (toxicity and bioassessment) testing methodologies for monitoring and assessing the remediation of contaminated sediment sites. Methods are
presented as fact sheets with hypertext links to access reference documents that often include the complete method description. The document primarily
focuses on methods from the published literature or other citable sources used at sites to determine the effects of chemical contaminants on aquatic life and
