Call for Abstracts
SedNet Conference
- 15 June 2006
In the framework of the SedNet
Symposium "Sediment key-issues between the river and the
sea" to be held on Friday November 24th, 2006 in Venice,
Italy.
Deadline for submission of abstracts:
Friday July 14th, 2006
Dear SedNet friend,
SedNet identified that for achieving the
objectives of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) it is
essential to give more and specific attention to
sediment. Through sediment there is an obvious, natural
connection between the river and the marine water
systems. As with the WFD, very little specific attention
to sediment is given presently in the Marine Strategy
discussions.
Sediment is an essential, integral and
dynamic part of our river basins.
At the end of most rivers, sediment is
deposited within the estuary and in the coastal zone. In
estuaries, sediment transport occurs both downstream and
upstream, mixing fluvial and marine sediments as a
result of tidal currents. It is difficult to define
where a river basin ends and where the marine system
starts. However, it is clear that sediment, along with
water, connect the two systems. From this it is also
clear that specific attention should be given to
sediment in the Marine Strategy discussions and that it
has to be done in close consultation with the WFD
implementation.
SedNet focuses on river AND marine
sediments and its mission is "to be a European network
aimed at incorporating sediment issues and knowledge
into European strategies to support the achievement of a
good environmental status and to develop new tools for
sediment management".
Hence, as indicated in our last
E-newsletter, SedNet is organizing a one day symposium
on Friday November 24th, 2006 in Venice, Italy entitled:
"Sediment key-issues between the river and the sea".
This symposium is aimed at discussing and defining the
SCIENTIFIC sediment key-issues at stake in the
transition area between the river basin and the marine
system.
The outcome will be used to draft a SedNet position
paper on this issue.
We would be very pleased to receive
abstracts for oral and poster presentations. It is
anticipated that all poster presentations will be
allowed. The SedNet steer group will select the most
appropriate oral presentations that fit best the aim of
the symposium.
Please use the template for submitting
your abstract by e-mail to Marjan Euser of the SedNet
secretariat:
marjan.euser@tno.nl . We would appreciate to receive
your abstract ultimately Friday July 14th, 2006. Feel
free to distribute this Call to your sediment-co-workers.
We very much look forward to receiving
your contributions and to the opportunity to see you all
again at our conference in November. Details on how to
register etc. will be made available early September.
With kind regards,
The SedNet steer group
